The Northumberland travel agency will close after the tragic death of owner and local legend

A Northumberland travel agency has announced its closure just months after the tragic death of its owner.

Baynes Travel has been in business for over half a century, but recently announced on its website that it will no longer operate following the death of owner and beloved figure in the Allendale community, Nigel Baynes, in March. Mr Baynes, a retained firefighter, died on Thursday March 10 in an accident at Baynes Coaches while off duty.

He joined his father’s travel business in the 1970s and remained at the helm until his death, alongside his role as chairman of the Allendale Drama Group where he starred as the long-running pantomime of the town. He also founded the Allendale Fair in 1983.

Following Mr Baynes’ death, the flags at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service fire stations were lowered to half-mast as a sign of respect and mourning. And now it has been announced that family-owned Baynes Travel will close later this month.

A statement on the Baynes Travel website read: “Following the recent tragic passing of Nigel Baynes, Founder and Owner of Baynes Travel, we are extremely saddened to announce that we will sadly be closing the business from July 24.

“We wholeheartedly thank our friends and customers for their love, loyalty and support, and for the memories we will cherish forever. Thank you all and we wish you well.”

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service Deputy Fire Chief Graeme Binning paid tribute to Nigel following his death in March. He said: ‘Nigel was a vital, popular and respected member of the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service’s Allendale team and has been since joining the service in 1980. This length of service is an example clear of Nigel’s commitment and dedication to providing service to his community.

“He will not only be missed by his family, friends and colleagues, he was also a key and prominent figure within the Allendale community. Our thoughts, best wishes and attention now go out to all those who have been affected by this tragedy.”
