‘Wander Womaniya’, a travel agency for women who aspire to explore the world!

A Mumbai-based travel agency, “Wander Womaniya”, run by Galaxy Pandey, ensures a safe environment for female travelers as it organizes trips only for women, organized by women.

These days, it’s common to come across exciting travel videos and images when one decides to scroll through one’s social media accounts. The platforms are inundated with travelers, regardless of their community, who can be seen introducing their audience to many of the world’s hidden gems using the new media tool. However, not so long ago, it was not so common for women to take up travelling, due to various biases and safety issues that surrounded the activity. Galaxy Pandey, the founder of “Wander Womaniya”, is one of the many women who also had to witness similar issues during the early stages of her life.

Pandey’s parents, who were from North India, always believed that “girls should get married after graduation”. Traveling had no place in their mindset, but Galaxy Pandey disagreed. One of his biggest dreams was to travel and see the world. Raised in Mumbai, she understood that her family was not comfortable with women traveling alone.

Don’t let go of the dream

The increasing number of crimes against women often made her parents believe that their decision not to let their daughter travel was the right one. On the other hand, Pandey often heard notions like “traveling is not for girls”. Despite these obstacles and the fact that she started working after graduation, she could not forget her dream which led to the creation of “Wander Womaniya” in 2018.

“The travel industry has always been male-dominated and it can only change with the participation of more and more women,” says Pandey, who co-founded the travel agency, aiming to provide a safe environment for women traveling alone. The duo began organizing trips and hikes for the women, where they would lead the trips indiscriminately.

However, Pandey was firm on his motive and only employed women in his business. Whether they are permanent or trainees, these women not only do research for the company but also lead trips to various places. “I couldn’t get the opportunity to work in the travel industry, but I wanted to give such a platform to others who had the same dream as me,” she says.

Galaxy Pandey also provides the ability to direct the journeys of her trainees, for which she follows a fixed procedure to understand their abilities. First, she assigns the task of conducting research for a trip, including booking tickets and hotels for women. In a second step, trainees are asked to accompany the attendants to learn the skill, and once they seem to have mastered the position of leadership, they are sent as attendants for the trips.

That aside, as Galaxy Pandey had dealt with her family issues herself, she thought an all-female team might be a motivating factor for other parents to send their daughters on solo trips, which which turned out to be a success. She began to observe more women who wanted to join “Wander Womaniya” to travel the world. “My parents hesitated whenever they encountered an incident of crimes against women. Thus, I believe that my team can reduce the reluctance of parents who are also going through the same situation,” she says.

Meanwhile, Pandey couldn’t muster the strength to tell his own family about his business. This could only have been possible when his initiative was published in a popular newspaper, which gave him the confidence to share news about his business.

To date, Galaxy Pandey has taken over 50 trips, including 10 international trips for women, over the past few years. Among these, she also led about fifteen trips to various places. With the reopening of international travel, she hopes to work on more international travel.

It can be said that Pandey’s business completely changed his life. From now on, she manages the trips of her parents but also of their acquaintances. One can feel the sense of satisfaction in her lyrics as she says, “I’m covering everything I missed earlier.”
